IpTL’s Machine-to-Machine Internet of Things Solutions Provide Secure Connectivity and Data Acquisition for distributed, reliable, and low-cost Water Quality Monitoring and Reporting.


BETHESDA, MD (April 21, 2015) – IP Technology Labs, along with Welbeck Secure Solutions (Welbeck), the leading provider of Trust-and-ControlTM technologies that extend full network functionality to any location, user, or device announced today that it has been selected by the River Alert Information Network (RAIN), to provide secure communications solutions for RAIN’s source water quality sensors and monitors located in and around Pittsburgh, PA.

The Welbeck solution was chosen for its no-touch reliability while connecting to industry standard sensor controllers. Additionally, the solution provides provided security to critical infrastructure while acquiring and distributing key sensor data to authorized locations.

RAIN is a regional source water protection program with a consortium of 33 municipal water authorities. Formed in 2012, RAIN monitors water quality on the Allegheny, Monongahela, Youghiogheny, Shenango, Beaver and Ohio rivers that providing drinking water to customers in the Ohio River Basin in Southwestern Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia.

Welbeck’s Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Internet-of-Things (IoT) solutions enabled it to:

  • Connect with water quality monitors at RAIN sensor monitor stations on the waterways using low-cost and available Internet services.

  • Acquire and poll data from the monitors over the Internet, even though they were not Internet-enabled.

  • Protect the privacy and security of the transmissions with encryption and other security features, creating end-to-end secure transmission.

  • Push and process acquired data to RAIN’s headquarters and RAIN public website’s interactive map at http://www.rainmatters.org/riverdata/rain.php.

  • Provide full-touch remote monitoring and management.
