Open User Access with Software Defined Networking – Integration of SDN services into IpTL Fastlane™ Appliances

Posted by Comments Off on Open User Access with Software Defined Networking – Integration of SDN services into IpTL Fastlane™ Appliances

The Evolution of Productivity

Network applications and the users of those applications have always driven connectivity requirements.

The first wave of evolution was speed. From Dial-up to broadband to 10Gb Ethernet, the connectivity infrastructure is now ready for mass-market use.

The second evolution is the explosion of network enabled applications and services using this speed. Today, even an office of a single user is a network-enabled user providing tangible efficiencies for communications, information management, and operations.

The third evolution is virtualization: efficiency, mobility, and scale. The user today requires access to all applications, for a variety of users, in a disparate location – all at the same time.

New and meaningful innovations, technologies, and services start out in the datacenter. The challenges consistently met by technology providers is the effective migration of these benefits to the actual users.

The cloud computing model offers real efficiencies to both the providers and users of the network. Offering elastic and on-demand resource allocation from any location promises a model low-cost access to high-end applications adjusted to the direct need of the organization.

But in order to effectively deliver on its promise cloud infrastructure providers too need dynamic access to resource regardless of which server the application or data resides.

As such, industry migration has been towards a “flat” network architecture based on existing Ethernet LAN technology. Only, IP Technology Labs offers a turnkey solution for touchless LAN Virtualization providing LAN based access to all remote resources securely.

Why Software Defined Networking (SDN)

Network Virtualization takes over where no VPN can ever go. But the infrastructure and applications desire to be seamlessly integrated. Software Defined Networking and the OpenFlow initiatives are driving this integration.

OpenFlow is a Layer 2 (Ethernet) communications methodology which allows applications and hardware to manage how the data flows, where the data flows, and when the data flows.

Initially seen within the LAN infrastructure elements such as Ethernet switches and WAN routers, OpenFlow permits application access to control how services are delivered. Additionally, key elements such as security and quality-of-service can be configured and managed across multiple vendor equipment regardless of type of device.

IpTL seeks to incorporate OpenFlow into its existing LAN Virtualization appliances to bring the following benefits directly to the end user:

  • Transparent and Seamless Application delivery regardless of protocol, datatype, or serving infrastructure
  • Automatic and Integrated End-to-End security from the user device to the application
  • Simultaneous & Multiple Access to application dataflows and services regardless of physical location of the user, the data, or the services offered.
  • Integration and communications with multi-vendor solutions end-to-end

IpTL has migrated to a 3.x kernel and thus had initial support for:

  • VXLAN Ethernet Interface permitting access to multiple Virtual Hosts on a single hardware platform
  • OpenFlow 1.3.0 support for IPv6
  • Open vSwitch with OVSDB management plane

Networks have become part of the critical infrastructure of our businesses, homes and schools. IpTL believes that OpenFlow will become an organic network element that will emerge as the enabler for truly interoperable cloud and datacenter fabrics.
